What is Betz Cell?

What is Betz or pyramidal cell?

Betz cells are large pyramidal shaped cells found only in the 5th layer of primary motor cortex. They have a diameter of about 60 micrometers. Large myelinated fibers (about 16 micrometers) of corticospinal tract originate from these cells in the primary motor cortex.
They transmit impulses to the spinal cord through large myelinated fibers in the corticospinal tract at a speed of about 70m/sec the fastest transmission rate.

A Ukrainian scientist Vladimir Betz discovered them.
